Search Engine Basics
Tips and tricks to help you achieve better
page rankings.
In my spare time, ( like I have any) apart
from my day job as a professional webmaster or when I'm not writing
for this site, I volunteer some of my time to the
Zeal community. Zeal is part of LookSmart, Ltd. Zeal community members
and LookSmart editors collaborate on the Zeal site to and increase the
significance of their contributions to the Web through LookSmart's
powerful distribution network. When sites are published on Zeal, they are
distributed to many of the most important media portals in the world,
including MSN, AltaVista, Excite, and hundreds of ISPs. My submissions help to build one of the best
hand built directory's in the world, its fun, and I have the opportunity
to see a lot of sites. I've submitted hundreds, and I've looked at
each and every one Prior to adding it in.
As an editor for one of the top search
engines, your given the task of insuring many different things prior
to a site being indexed. Some examples would be, dose the content of the
site, match the title and description in the the submission, or dose the
submission conforms to guidelines, dose the sites content conform to
guidelines? So I look at each site. I also have the opportunity to rate the site, and write a byline
on it.
The submission for the text that appears in
the directory, (the text that describes the page or the site) has to be
edited as well. looking at the actual page helps me to determine many of
these things, along with using other software and tools, that Zeal
provides me with online.
The reason I'm telling you all this is that
one of the worst things you can do is to submit your site to early or
before its ready. If your not ready then back up and get ready first.
There are so many things to consider like robots.txt files,
meta tags,
labeling through
irca.org , page titles, content, keywords and so much more to
get ready. Make sure your sites ready BEFORE you submit it to the
search engines.
Once you have your site prepared,
meta tags in
place, and its in your opinion ready to be submitted then you'll want to
use this page.
Submitting Your Site
The following links will take you to the
respective search engine or directories submission page, or to their "how
to" page, or maybe the home page, hehe but most likely it'll get you
started and you'll soon see how easy it is to get your self listed with
several search engines very quickly, and submitted correctly to.
You'll want to start with what I believe to be
the Number One Free Resource on the Planet. Certainly one of the
most used -
