Publishing Your Web

When you have finished building your web on your computer you are going to want to publish it to the internet.  Here are a few things you should know.

Publishing with FrontPage Server Extensions installed.
  1. Click File/Publish Web
  2. 2000/2002: In the dialogue box type in the destination of your website. Normally it will be some thing like http://www.rtbwizards.com. (Remember: the http:// must come before the domain name)
  3. 2003: You will see a local and remote pane. Local is your own computer and remote is your web host. For updated information, check the FrontPage help files regarding publishing your web.
  4. You have the option to publish all pages or changed pages only.  The first time you publish your web, ALL of your pages are considered changed pages and will be published.
  5. Click Publish
  6. When your publish is successful you will have a dialogue box open telling you so and giving you the option to view your published site. Go ahead and view it and be sure everything looks okay.
Publishing with FrontPage FTP

If your server does not have server extensions you can still use FrontPage to publish your web. Follow the same steps as above except put FTP:// before your domain instead of http://.

Remember many FrontPage features will not work, such as forms, and other web components. However, many of these items are available through the use of CGI scripts which your host may support. Please contact your web host's technical support team for more detailed information.

Tip: FrontPage automatically keeps track of changes you make to your site and resolves those changes every time you publish.  If, however, you make extensive changes, you can give FrontPage a helping hand by "Recalculating Hyperlinks."  You can find this handy feature under Tools / Recalculate Hyperlinks.

I use this tool each and every time before I publish to keep things running smoothly and error free.

Q: I keep getting an error about server extensions when I publish. What do I do?

A: This probably means your host does not have your server extensions installed for your account. Contact your host and have them install them then try to publish again.  If your host does not support server extensions, use FTP instead of the Publish feature.

Q: Should I use FTP to publish my web?

A: You can successfully use FrontPage without the server extensions.  This involves using an FTP program.  If, however, you do have these server extensions installed on your web, it is recommended that you use either the "publish" feature or FTP, but do not mix the two.  In other words, choose one option and use it consistently to avoid damaging any extensions which are installed.
