Editing Basics

First Step: Installing Your New Web Template

If you're a new FrontPage user, you'll need to realize that the files you downloaded and installed are not in themselves a "web site" or "web." Instead, they are template files that FrontPage uses to create a new web for you. This means that you can make as many web sites as you want from one web template! (Be sure to read the License Agreement that came with your template for restrictions.)

Do not try opening the files you downloaded directly with FrontPage. Follow these instructions carefully and you will have your files installed in just a few minutes. Please use WinZip to unzip. If you don’t have WinZip you can get an evaluation copy of it at http://winzip.com

NOTE: In some instances, those who install FrontPage 2003 may find that their previously installed templates do not show up in the list of choices in the new version. Something similar occurred when the move was made from FrontPage 98 to FrontPage 2000. Don't worry, your templates are still safe and sound on your computer. You will have to move them from their currently location into the new location that FrontPage 2003 can find. It's a quick and easy task.

Old location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033\webs

New General FrontPage 2003 Template: Using this option will put Template files under the 'General' tab when selecting the template in FrontPage 2003, 2002, and earlier.

FrontPage Web Template folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033\Webs11\<folder_name.tem>

Profile Location - FrontPage 2003 Template: Using this option will put Template files under the 'My Templates' tab when selecting the template in FrontPage 2003 and the 'General' tab when selecting the template in FrontPage 2002 and earlier.

FrontPage Web Template folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\Webs\<folder_name.tem>

Our theme package files are available for download in an executable format.  If we email the files to you, they will be in a zipped format.  Follow the correct file format directions shown below:

Executable Files:

Our executable files are created using the WinZip self-extractor program.  The theme installation program is designed to be used with WinZip.  If you do not have this program, you will see more instructions below.

  • When you click on the "download" here area, please ALWAYS select the "Save to Disk" option.  Do not select "Open from Current Location."
  • Save the executable file to a location on your hard drive.
  • Once downloaded, open Windows Explorer and find your new file.
  • Make sure that your FrontPage program is closed.
  • Double-click on the file.
  • This begins the installation process. It only takes a few minutes. It’s a good idea to read over the "Read Me" file that is included.
  • Your new theme and template files will be automatically extracted and installed into the correct directories.
  • When the process is completed, you will see a screen that says "installation successful" or "installation completed". You’re finished so you can close the windows and get back to your desktop.
  • Once installed, make a backup copy of your original executable file.  Place it onto a floppy disk and label the disk with the file name, date of purchase, and order number.

Zipped Files:

  • You will need a utility program such as WinZip in order to unzip and access these files. If you do not have such a program, go to any search engine page and search for "WinZip".  Download and install the program.
  • Save the attached email file to a location on your hard drive or to a floppy disk. (Saving to disk is a good choice. If you have a computer crash, you will then have a back-up copy of your theme package.)
  • DO NOT UNZIP THE FILE.
  • Make sure that your Front Page program is closed. Don’t just minimize it - close it. The installation will fail if Front Page is open.
  • Double-click on your saved file. WinZip will open in a new window. Click on the Install icon in the top of that window.
  • This begins the installation process. It only takes a few minutes. It’s a good idea to read over the "Read Me" file that is included.
  • When the process is completed, you will see a screen that says "installation successful" or "installation completed". You’re finished so you can simple close the windows and get back to your desktop.

Special Note:  If you are using Windows XP, your operating system comes with its own zipping utility program installed.  If you use this program, you will need to extract all files into a new, empty folder.  Once done, locate the folder, open it, and then click on the Install.exe.  Your theme and templates files will them be installed correctly. If you haven’t already made a back-up copy of your original zipped or executable file, do it now.

Now you are ready to create a new web using the template and begin editing your pages. Read the pages within this section for detailed information.
