Adding New Pages

There are several ways to create a page and add it to a template. Below are the three best ways to do it.

  • Using the newpage.htm
  • Using A New Page Template
  • Using the Save As function

Using the newpage.htm

Each template comes with a newpage.htm, use this newpage.htm to create extra pages for your web. In the Folders View, locate the newpage.htm.  Click once to highlight it.  Copy the page (Control + C to copy.....Control + V to paste)  You will have created a duplicate of the new page which will be called "Copy of newpage(1).htm."

Once you have made your newest page, you can rename it (right click on the page and select "rename" from the menu of choices). Then simply drag your new page into the navigation view. Front Page® will then apply the proper names to the buttons and page banner.  Now you can delete this existing text and replace it with your own.

Using A New Page Template

  1. On the menubar, go to File, point to New, and click on Page, then select the page template you want to use. (If you only want a blank Normal Page,  you can just click on the New Page icon on the toolbar.)
  2. If the page uses a theme and you want to disable it, go to Format and click on Theme (or right-click and select Theme). In the Theme dialog box, select No Theme. In the upper left corner, make sure you select Current Page.
  3. If your web uses shared borders and you want to disable them, go to Format and click on Borders. Click on the border icons to deselect the borders you want to get rid of. Be sure to select Current Page.
  4. When you save your page, your File Name should not have spaces in it. You may use hyphens or underscores (file_name.htm or file-name.htm). You may also change the Page Title, which is what will show up on your banners and buttons.
  5. After saving your page, drag your page into Navigation View.

We do not package a New Page Template with our templates, but you can create one if you wish to use this technique to create new pages for your web. You can create a New Page Template by following the instructions below.

To create a New Page Template

  1. Open the newpage.htm.
  2. Click File/Save As
  3. In the dialogue box choose FrontPage Template (.tem) as your Save as type.
  4. A New Page Template will be created and all the graphics will be saved to the correct paths on your computer.
  5. To use your New Page Template follow the instructions here.
The Save As Dialogue Box

  • Page Title - Creates your page title for both the page properties (appears at the top of the web browser window) and the Title on your Page Banner and Navigation Buttons. Click the change button to edit.
  • File Name - This is where you name the file. Be sure to not have any spaces between the words, use lowercase letters and keep the ,htm intact.
  • Save As type - This is where you choose to save the page as a template or .htm

Q: What's the difference between a Page template and a Web template?

FrontPage Page Templates
A "page template" is a special folder containing one HTML file and related graphic files, plus some FrontPage information files. FrontPage uses these files to help a user create as many new pages as they want with the layout specified.

FrontPage Web Templates
A "web template" is a special folder collection of HTML pages, related graphic and other files, plus some FrontPage information files. FrontPage uses these files to help a user create a new FrontPage web -- or as many webs as they want. The initial new web has the pages and files -- and even navigation structure -- specified by the developer, but the user can then modify the web by adding or deleting pages, changing text, and changing the navigation structure.

Q: My page looks funny. What's wrong?

A: First, go to File | Preview in Browser. Chances are that your page just looks funny in Normal View. If you see small gaps in between images in Normal View, don't worry! If the page template uses tables to lay out the images, Normal View pushes the pictures around slightly to make room for the table guidelines. They will disappear and fit nicely when you look at the page with a browser.  Note: The preview tab at the bottom of the page does not give an accurate view of what your final page will look like.

Q: I don't have any buttons or banners on my page. Some of the navigation bars aren't showing up.

A: You may see something like [Add this page to the Navigation View to display hyperlinks here] or [Change the properties of this Navigation bar...]. In the first case, you will need to add your page to navigation view. Go to your Navigation View, then drag your page from the Folder List column into the navigation structure.

In the second case, right-click on the [Change the properties...] text and select Navigation Bar Properties. Look at what kind of navigation has been selected. It's possible that there are no pages for that kind of navigation -- for example, if you have "Child Pages" selected, but the page has no child pages, then the navigation bar will not display.

Save your changes and go to File | Preview in Browser to make sure everything worked.

Q: The buttons and banners show up as text, not as graphics. Why?

A: The theme is probably not applied. Go to Format | Theme and you will probably find that "No Theme" is selected. Select your theme and this should fix the problem.

You may also want to check the Navigation Bar Properties (right-click on the Navigation bar) and make sure that "Buttons" is selected under "Orientation and Appearance."

Tip: Using the Save As function to create a new page.

The fastest way to create pages on the fly is to use the Save As function in FrontPage. This technique is especially good for templates that have more that one layout page.

  1. Open a page in your web with a layout that will suit what you need the page for.

  2. Click File/Save As.

  3. In the dialogue box at the Page Title area click the Change Button. And Change the Name to Suit.

  4. In the File name box type in the new file name with no spaces and be sure to leave the .htm intact.

  5. Now click save.

  6. Your new page will appear in the folder list.

  7. Go to The Navigation View and drag and drop your new page to where you want it in the navigation structure.
